Gf/CF Pitfalls
Solutions for Common Mistakes
Dietary intervention is a cornerstone of a Defeat Autism Now! approach, and there is convincing empirical evidence that special diets help many with autism. A group of parent leaders who successfully implemented diets for their children compiled the following information and suggestions. These include references, resources, and links to aid parents as they begin exploring effective, evidence-based treatments.

From the Director:
With spring in full swing, the Autism Research Institute moves forward in expanding and summarizing the knowledge base on autism, and disseminating this information through our newsletters, conferences, and websites.
Last month we had a very successful ARI/Defeat Autism Now! conference in Atlanta, Georgia. The conference consisted of valuable presentations during three full days and two evenings. In addition, over 200 practitioners attended our two-day clinician seminars. We also introduced our two-day nutrition seminar, and the feedback from the 57 attendees was excellent. I would like to thank the staff and volunteers for their hard work and dedication, and for doing a truly wonderful job!
At their invitation, we have scheduled a Level I clinician seminar to coincide with the Autism One conference in Chicago (May 21-22). In addition, we are planning a two-day regional ARI/Defeat Autism Now! conference to be held next month in Oklahoma City (June 13-14). Visit www.DefeatAutismNow.com for more information.
If you live in southern California, I hope you will attend the opening of the art show 'Color Odyssey,' by Frank Leo Vicino at the Edgeware Gallery on May 16. See www.EdgewareGallery.com.
Mark Rimland will also be at the show to greet visitors and to sign copies of his book, notecards, and prints. A portion of the sales will fund research to develop and to validate effective treatments for people on the autism spectrum.
I will be attending the Autism One conference later this month. If you see me at ARI's exhibit booth, or walking around the hallway, please stop and say 'hi.'
Best regards,
Steve Edelson, Ph.D. Director, Autism Research Institute |

| Reflections from Atlanta...
Caregivers share insights from last month's conference
After each Defeat Autism Now! Conference we conduct a survey to gather thoughts and feedback from the caregivers and professionals who joined us. Here are some thoughts the attendees from last month's conference shared: The conference gave me great hope to continue pressing ahead. I really learned a great deal. I finally understood why some treatments worked and others didn't. I learned about possible areas of treatment that could be effective, realizing that what I thought was just behavioral had an actual biomedical reason with possible treatment for the same.
This is the best "all encompassing" place for information on RECOVERING our children from the grips of Autism, not just learning to "live with it."
I am so thankful for the wealth of information I received at this conference. By the time I got home I felt empowered and have a clear path of the next steps I need to take with my son. I really believe there is HOPE! Thank you.
In so few other venues can parents of children with Autism be encouraged, trained, and built up to continue this difficult journey. How grateful I am for you all.
It's so difficult to find doctors who actually care for my son and myself. Many just discount what we do and DAN! shows each parent that love and the power of knowledge can recover our children. I couldn't possibly be more grateful to ARI or any of the doctors at the conference.
Videos and audio files from the conference will be available on the autism.com web site in the weeks to come - we will send an announcement when they are available for viewing.

Join our Million Dollar Puzzle Piece Campaign
Now's the perfect time to order your free Puzzle Piece kits and launch an autism awareness campaign in your community. When we raise the funding necessary, ARI will see that important research is done, including the large-scale, independent study of vaccinated vs. unvaccinated children
Update from Organizer Lynda Huggins:
We have distributed 3,426 packets (171,300 puzzle pieces) to 48 states (446 cities) and have already forwarded over $60,000 to the Autism Research Institute. We are not yet in Montana or North Dakota. We have a l-o-n-g way to go to reach our goal of a Million Dollars for Autism Research but our grassroots efforts WILL make it happen. We need everyone who cares about someone with an Autism Spectrum Disorder to donate a buck to get us there. Our efforts honor the life and legacy of Dr. Rimland, keeping his dream alive to Defeat Autism Now! We are going great guns and looking forward to receiving lots of donations from all the Autism Awareness events that were held in April. Latest stats on the Autism Puzzle Pieces: Distribution: 3,568 packets = 178,400 puzzle pieces 48 states, Singapore & 5 locations in Canada (458 cities) We are now able to accept donations (and specify "for the Autism Puzzle Pieces Campaign") directly on the ARI web site. The Million Dollar Puzzle is also listed as a "Cause" on FaceBook and folks can donate there as well. This project is year round -- we will continue until we reach our goal. Many thanks, Lynda

Autism One 2009 - Change Has Come Wednesday, May 20-Sunday, May 24 at the Westin O'Hare Hotel (Chicago area) Actress Jenny McCarthy to deliver keynote address at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 23
A diagnosis of or suspicion that your child has autism is devastating. After months or years of denial it cannot be denied any longer. You are faced with the greatest question of your life - how to best help your child.
The difficult step toward finding answers is a courageous one that can be as frightening as the initial suspicion or confirming diagnosis. It means recognizing and rejecting that labyrinth of Jabberwocky, gobbledygook, circular reasoning, and non-answers parents most often hear.
It means educating yourself. It means trusting yourself. It means believing your child can get better.
